Film Passion & Midnight Sun

SODANKYLÄ. To be surrounded by the clear light of the midnight sun, and then voluntarily creep into the darkness of a cinema to watch films might seem like an odd summer activity, but has turned out to be a quite successful concept in Sodankylä, northern Lapland. Finland’s famous film brothers Kaurismäki started the Midnight Sun Film Festival in 1986, and today the festival is established as one of the most interesting and relaxed film meetings in Europe. This year’s model (13th – 17th of June) will welcome two female actors who began their careers in the 1950’s: Finland’s only Hollywood star Taina Elg, and Ingmar Bergman’s Harriet Andersson. Among younger filmmakers, Swedish Ruben Östlund and Axel Petersén will visit the festival, as well as American cult movie maker Alan Rudolph and Hungarian Béla Tarr. Film classics and silent movies will also be screened under the midnight sun.
