East Goes Oats

BODEN. In 2010, the city of Boden took a giant step forward on the art scene. The huge oats warehouse, earlier used by the Swedish army to feed horses was transferred to a six floor modern art gallery. Artist and project leader Ricky Sandberg could present a big art exhibition named ”The Russians Are Coming!” – contemporary Russian art exposed in the centre of the old garrison town! Time had really changed after the Cold War. Boden also has a proud history of local artists, and they were also presented two years ago.

After a quiet 2011, it’s time again for a big art attack, this time from further East. The title is ”Reoriented” and presents works by contemporary artists from the Middle East, and also from the Nordic countries. There is a growing interest in the culture of North African countries, especially after last year’s start of democracy processes in the ”Arabic Spring”. These changes are of course also sensed in the region’s contemporary art.
In the oats warehouse, one section is also reserved for ”The Boden School” of local artists from the 40’s to the 60’s.
