KIRUNA. Swedish mining town Kiruna will be very different in the future. The excavation for iron ore continues more than a kilometre below surface and will result in parts of the city literally falling down into the holes. The plans for a new city centre is very active at the moment:
1o international teams of architects have been chosen to give their visions of the new city centre of Kiruna. The mixed teams are from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Great Britain, Spain, The Netherlands, Germany and Switzerland. They will visit Kiruna in August and present their concept ideas in the beginning of 2013, when a winner of the contest will be presented.
A vision project called Kiruna 2.0. has just started. The idea is to involve people in Kiruna in the process of building a new city centre. The project is run by the municipality, which has also created nine working groups focusing on culture, education and other topics.
