ARKHANGELSK/KANDALAKSHA. In recent years more and more yards in northwest Russia have undergone positive changes. Outside many dwelling houses rubbish and mud earlier welcomed people when entering the buildings. Today, more and more people take responsibility for the own environment, and start making small gardens with flowers and decorative figures outside their houses.

In Arkhangelsk this has grown to a movement, with annual contests about the prettiest public arrangements. Except for flowers and bushes, many different materials are used in the gardening – rubber tires, plastic bottles, old rubber boots and a diversity of funny figures.
