ROVANIEMI. Crack is a notorious drug but also railo in English. And Railo is the name of the new 2000 seats sportarena in Rovaniemi. Winner of the Finlandia Architecture-prize 2016, it was planned by APRT-architects from Helsinki, the same company that made Pilke, a building for Metsähallitus (State Forest Enterprise) next to Arktikum (the museum and arctic science centre) in Rovaniemi.
Railo is a home for RoPS (Rovaniemen Palloseura), a local football club, that ended 6th this season in the highest Finnish league. But of course Railo is open for everyone, and in summer, music concerts are held here. In the winter there´s only a skiing track around the area, but inside the building one can find a dancehall.
Seen from the street. Railo looks like a massive modernist sculpture, especially during winter nights, with snow and lighting. This experience will probably get even stronger when buildings of the same style will be built opposite the street.
Railo was chosen as the winner by ex prime minister Paavo Lipponen, who has been interested in architecture for a long time. Mr. Lipponen – by the way – spent his first years in Barents Region: in Finnish Turtola, Tornio River Valley.
