Outi Tarkiainen´s new composition Maa, kevään tytär (Earth, Daughter of Spring) is touring Norway and Sweden after the premieres in Rovaniemi and Inari this autumn. The leading role was played by mezzosoprano Virpi Räisänen,Â backed by Lapland´s Chamber Orchestra conducted by John Storgårds. Maa… is a 40 minutes long series of songs in Northern Sami, based on texts of Sami poets like Nils-Aslak Valkeapää, Rauni Magga Lukkari and Rose-Marie Huuva.
Tarkiainen (born 1985) from Rovaniemi has graduated from Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. In her music one can hear the tradition of modern art music together with jazz and even etno. Her compositions have been played by ensembles like Avanti! and UMO Jazz Orchestra with jazz-legends like Randy Brecker. Norbotten Big Band (Sweden) with vocalist Aili Ikonen have also put her music on CD.
