We are standing on the treshold of another busy festival summer in the north of Sweden. The two counties – Norrbotten and Västerbotten – have a lot to offer during a period when the sun is up most of the night. Here´s is our selection and we´re starting with Norrbotten and the northern municipality of Kiruna:
May 18th-20th: The festival season begins early with the Pamojafestivalen which is an event against racism arranged by local school Malmfältens Folkhögskola. The festival is free of charge for the visitors and was first started in 2013 by volunteers from the school. On the agenda: music, dance, lectures and workshops.

June 27th-29th Kiruna Pride Festival is an event for everybody, and it comes in the name of love, says the organisers. A festival parading with full colours and here you will find both diversity and equal rights. At the venue Scandic Ferrum Solsidan artist Cameron Jai aims to create an electrifying evening.
June 29th-July 2nd: Kirunafestivalen is a big get together up north where the atmosphere will be raised by plenty of food and drink, a funfair and a host of celebrated artists such as Sami singer Sofia Jannok, blues woman Lisa Lystam plus Weeping Willows and Magnus Uggla.
July 28th-29th Dansklacken på Dosan is culture festival in Karesuando, Kiruna municipality right on the border of Finland. This is the fifth time for the festival and the visiting artist are Raj Raj Band, Willy Clay Band, Hanna Nutti and Höstorkestern.
Haparanda 21th-24th July: Seskarö skärgårdsfestival is a event on the island of Seskarö some 20 kilometers from the town centre of Haparanda. Music entertainment, food and drink, an art exhibition, a historic lecture about the island and a sunday service in the church held by the bishop of north Sweden.
Luleå 16th-18th July: Spelmansstämman, Gammelstad Luleå. A traditional Swedish folk music festival that has been going since the 70s in the ”Old town” near Luleå. Besides the music there will be dancing, workshops, church service and local food.
19-22 july Medeltidsdagar på Hägnan: Luleå’s medieval society, SCA Frostheim, working with the museum at Hägnan in Gammelstad to give you the Medieval Days this summer. Here you can watch knights fighting, artisans wielding their crafts and jesters entertaining the public.

Piteå, 16th-17th June: Festspelen i Piteå is a musical highlight in south Norrbotten. Lisa Nilsson with Norrbotten Big Band, folk musicians Orsa spelmän will be there as will poet and musician Mattias Alkberg, singer/songwriter Jennie Abrahamsson and pianoman Daniel Karlsson with his jazzy trio.
The County of Västerbotten:
Skellefteå July 21st-22nd: Trästock (”Wood Log”) is a popular rock festival with a nationwide reputation. This year´s line-up is again impressive with poet and singer Annika Norlin´s band Säkert! leading the way. Invsn, Lisa Miskovsky, Avantgardet, Linnea Henriksson and rapper Zacke will also be there just to mention a few. Info: http://trastockfestivalen.se/
Umeå: 1st-3rd June: Brännbollsyran (Rounders). Hundreds of people gather every year to play rounders with the bat and ball in Umeå. Apart from playing/watching the Rounders team competition, people just come out to dance and party in the biggest city of Norrland. Dj:s and a host of bands and artist are there to entertain the huge crowds out on the Mariehem meadows. This year Little Jinder, Zara Larsson, Kygo and Kapten Röd are among the musicians to perform at Brännbollsyran.
30th June-2nd July: Midnight Light Tango Festival. There will be dancing (South-American milongas) both outdoor and indoor and workshops going on at Väven Culture Centre in Umeå.
https://www.youtube.com/c/yebanishedprivateers28-30 juli Visfestivalen, Holmön: This Ballad Festival is held every year on the island of Holmön out in the Gulf of Bothnia, some 10 kilometers from the mainland. The festival 2017 can present several well-known artists in its programme: Rapgirl Cleo with Broder John, Thomas Andersson Wij, Sofia Carlsson, Orsa Spelmän and folkrockers Ye Banished Privateers.
May 29th -June 28th: Inlandsbanefestivalen. A movable festival that will visit the communities along the railroad track (Inlandsbanan) in western and inner Västerbotten and Norrbotten. The railbus will take the musicians and dancers from one community to the another during a month´s adventure through sparcely populated areas. The idea is to bring people together for the happenings at every stop. Janne Bark, Py Bäckman, Johan Piribauer and dance group UPDC are among the entertainers to make this journey that has been in motion every summer since 2007.
